The Content of Discontent or: How I learned to Stomp Snakes From the Garden.

Concupiscence corrupts Christian contentment.

SUMMARY: We live in a Too Long; Didn’t Read (TL;DR) culture. So, here’s a summary of what you’ll see. Read the whole thing, form a habit of reading. And not just fantasy fiction, because that’s another distilled worldview- it’s just not as popular as film and television. Don’t dismiss this because you’re lazy and claim you don’t have time- you do. It’s just that you don’t care enough to finish listening with your eyes when you could be scrolling on something else that lights up addictive dopamine receptors in your brain.

Don’t scan, read. Slow down and read. Build your attention span by being methodical.

Content: The Marketplace of Discontent.

What is it society wants you to desire more than anything?

Give it a second.

What you don’t have. Netflix, Amazon, Walmart, and YouTube push content to fill you with discontented desires for things that don’t belong to you. Once you have that object or idea, they assure you that everything else will magically fall into place. The ancient, but effective “the grass is greener” play. Put another way “If I only had ______ then I’d be happy.” That’s a lie. Recognize that now. You’d only want more, and more is never enough. It’s like a football game. How many points is enough? More.

The problem is always you and your heart. If you have kids, you know this all too well. One hour of something isn’t enough for kids, it needs to be more. “Look at what you don’t have,” society whispers, “isn’t it terrible you don’t have that object of your desire? You DESERVE it, just for being you!”

The content we consume tends toward discontent. Yea, that’s a play on words, but it’s not the only play. Notice how this play gets run in the music you listen to, the novels you read, your ads on social media, and the shows you watch. Listen for it, watch for it. Be prepared for it, because it’s in everything we have. But the groans of those without Christ will always be for something they don’t have. In the words of Trent Reznor, “never be enough to fill me up.” It’s the God-sized hole. The gap in every human heart. Filled to the brim with lies, lust, and longing for something that is unattainable. You’re also never to blame for your own problems.

Picture it this way.

Our culture is like a large group of malnourished people unable and unwilling to see, feeling around an enclosed room shouting to one another about the best way to see, unwilling to walk outside their hateful darkened cell into the marvelous light of the Kingdom of God. Every time someone flings open the unlocked darkened cell, the hunched-over wretches cry out in rage at the blinding light and offending odor of freedom invading from outside. “We’re quite pleased to remain in here tearing each other apart with our theories about how to make the cell more accommodating! Just give us more money, food, and clothes! We much prefer the darkness of this prison to your wicked light. At least we’re in charge in here.”

In reality (within this metaphor), the manager of the building will open the door for his people and will drag out those who are His. The rest of the people, and their theories, will remain inside. While the bulldozer razes that dark, tribalistic building to the ground in just a few short ticks of the existential clock. The people trapped inside collectively groan in discontent at the conditions of their shelter. But they have no real interest in any actual change of their conditions, more like change of backdrop and location in the blackened pitch of the soul.

This blackened pitch of discontent always manifests itself sinfully, and often differently for men and women. Those theories drown us in ankle deep waters, every time we try to swim in them. For that we go back to the Garden.

The Serpent and the Garden (Genesis 3)

Adam and Eve were created holy and happy, able to obey God. Things go great. Enter the serpent. That old serpent Satan, like all good Marxist feminists, he just has some “questions” about the “established structures” and the glaring “inequalities” of the garden. Namely, the speaking Serpent’s first question is as a textual critic. “Did God really say?” It’s an attack on God’s very revealed Word. The Serpent just wants some equity and justice for these poor, oppressed image-bearers of God. The serpent sees the festering inequalities and goes straight to the weaker vessel. The poor, oppressed woman who has everything but the one thing our socialist serpent wants her to have. Thus, he points her attention to gaze upon the one thing she does not have, look upon it. Lust for it. The forbidden fruit.

Effectively, he’s telling her to ignore all the other wonderful fruits at her disposal, and instead to focus on and aim at that one fruit that does not belong to her. The serpent hisses, “that fruit was meant for you! Seize it! Aim at it, ponder it, seize it and defy your Creator.” Naturally (being good at being himself) Satan, that liar of old, promises (by the honor of his hissing word) that God’s promises are a lie. The serpent then goes on to omit, by lying, the little detail about deliberately defying God. Carpe diem, and bottoms up. God hasn’t come and struck them down or intervened yet, so why not? Maybe this God isn’t so omnipresent and powerful after all.

Eve falls first, and apathetic activist Adam doesn’t want to tell his wife “no” nor does Adam do his job and hack that serpent to pieces. Instead, Adam just goes right along with the largest known crowd formed at the time. He takes a big old apologetic bite before the first major assembly of creatures. Long live democracy, right? At that moment the mob of democracy turns to federally enacted spiritual democide. Death on demand, but wait, they still live? They’ve eaten the damned fruit. Perhaps they won after all, right?

Wrong.

God saw, confronted and cursed all those involved. But he also promised deliverance. Displaying his justice and mercy.

“Damn you and your children” was the serpent’s trick. Destroy your offspring like it’s a Planned Parenthood. Cut them off! The devil is the original deconstructionist, it’s like he was a consultant on the script for The Last Jedi. The Curse strikes like the serpent. Behold, the apathetic religion of man. The damage is done, and the poison fills Adam and Eve’s veins as sin changes mankind’s estate. The federal head of man has fallen. Damaging mankind’s DNA permanently like a mustard gas attack. Satan draws first blood. What was created to last forever must now taste death. Dead souls in living bodies.

Just like that, we watch spiritual suicide give birth to the first murderer. Who then proceeds to follow the same cycle. Death through disobedience. It’s the same pattern we still see:

-Reject God’s Word

-Ask “questions” aimed at denying God’s clear statements in His Word

-Focus on and desire a sin

-Justify that sin

-Conduct that sin

-Make excuses for why it’s everyone else’s fault you sinned

(If it involved unwanted pregnancy, make sure you add murder to it)

-Feel guilty

-Reject God’s Word

Behold concupiscence

Ah, concupiscence. Before we define it, let’s use it in a sentence a few times. We’ll be sticking with strong desire, particularly as it pertains to violating God’s Law. Concupiscence will manifest itself differently in each individual, but the tools for our society’s assault with discontent vary based on the sexes. Sin is the pivotal problem of mankind.

Concupiscence (and the definition of lust we’ll be using) is defined as:

Strong desire; especially, sexual desire.

Buckle up for a blog-sized beatdown, men.

Men and the curse.

17  Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’;

Cursed is the ground because of you;

In toil you will eat of it

All the days of your life.

18  “Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you;

And you will eat the plants of the field;

  19 By the sweat of your face

You will eat bread,

Till you return to the ground,

Because from it you were taken;

For you are dust,

And to dust you shall return.”[1]

That’s the curse we suffer under as men. Work is not the curse. The peril, difficulty and pain are. Our society makes it no easier, attacking worn out men by specifically using discontentment. But discontentment in what way?

 The radical feminists have an answer. Discontentment is the means to destroy the patriarchy. The patriarch is a man, the man is an oppressor and must be demoralized, disorganized, divided, and destroyed. All by means of disruptive, deconstructionist discontentment. This is both a strategic and tactical assault, both passive and active. Don’t believe me? That’s another essay that will be forthcoming in due time. The Marxist feminist answer to create male discontented discord is simple, push a lifestyle and call it life.

Here’s a brief snippet from Mallorie Millet, sister of radical feminist activist Katie Millett. Katie Millett had extreme mental health issues and yet miraculously remains a paragon of thought with the feminist world. What Mallorie observed while attending one of her sister’s feminist meetings is disturbing, but unsurprising.

From “Marxist Feminism’s Ruined Lives”:

“Why are we here today?” she [KATIE] asked.
“To make revolution,” they answered.
“What kind of revolution?” she replied.
“The Cultural Revolution,” they chanted.
“And how do we make Cultural Revolution?” she demanded.
“By destroying the American family!” they answered.
“How do we destroy the family?” she came back.
“By destroying the American Patriarch,” they cried exuberantly.
“And how do we destroy the American Patriarch?” she replied.
“By taking away his power!”
“How do we do that?”
“By destroying monogamy!” they shouted.
“How can we destroy monogamy?”

Their answer left me dumbstruck, breathless, disbelieving my ears.  Was I on planet earth?  Who were these people?

“By promoting promiscuity, eroticism, prostitution and homosexuality!” they resounded.

Don’t forget the Mao’s cultural revolution killed millions. This is the fundamental assault being waged. You can’t deny those phrases given the current active mission of the so-called BLM organizers and the amount of companies actively now monetarily supporting them. The people are not the problem, the ideology and tactics are what you must be prepared for.

Paul warns in his first epistle to the Corinthians to “Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.” (1 Corinthians 16:13) We cannot afford to let our guard down. The assault comes from two common fronts for the man. We don’t need to take to the streets, we need to take to our homes and churches with the love, boldness, humility, and zeal of Christ.

1. Apathy

Where was Adam when Eve was being seduced to eat the fruit? Adam was right there with Eve (Gen 3:6). Where are you when you get done with work? With your wife? On the couch? Down the dopamine rabbit hole on YouTube? Yes, work is what you are to be doing as a man, to the best of your human ability. But your work does not end when you get home. It becomes exponentially cosmically significant. Especially if you have children, and exponentially if they’re in school. As a Christian man, you are to be the hardest working person in whatever room you’re in. No excuses. You aren’t called to end everything with an octave-raised question mark and averted eye-contact. Adam is commanded to cultivate (work) and keep (protect). These are commands given to man, and men, specifically and preeminently. But the curse is that this is difficult and exhausting. It doesn’t stop when you get home from work. Our culture pushes laziness as leisure. Pleasure as productivity. Passivity as parenting. We love it, too. You’re switched off on the couch, and now you get instruction (read Kool-Aid).

As a husband you are called to lead your wife to, and in, Christ. As a man you are called to submit to Christ and be found in Him (think of this is as being on the Ark). Perhaps you are reading this and feel apathy toward Christ. He is the last Adam, the Christian’s reconciliation to God. None of this will matter if you are without Christ. Turn to him.

Your job is to love your wife as Christ loved the church and wash your wife in the Word of God. (Eph 5:25-26) That means to get your Bible out and start reading it. We’ll have a format for Family Worship coming soon.

You don’t have a wife? Good, get to training in godliness. Put down your damned controller, set a timer, and start training. Get someone to disciple you, right now. Find the elders of your church (or men who don’t have terrible children) and stick to one of them like glue. If your church doesn’t have elders, it’s highly likely that you’re not at a church.

The worst part about apathy is that it’s neglect. Especially if you’re apathetic about those God has given you charge over. Your job is dying daily and sacrificing yourself for your family. Sure, we’re going to fail. We must turn to Christ and repent for that. But your first priority is Christ and caring for his daughter, your wife. If you don’t have a wife, you should be preparing and training in godliness.

Just a reminder, this is practical information to make you think about what’s going on in the war raging around you. Doing this will not save you or make you a Christian. But if you’re a Christian this will greatly help you. If you’re not, find a bible believing, gospel-preaching church with elders and ask them to read one of the Gospels with you.

2. Sexual Lust

I’m not saying that every man struggles with the sin of sexual lust all the time. I’m saying every man is carpet-bombed by it with mind-numbing regularity. Nearly every moment there’s a screen active or an advertisement in a store. Feminists claim to be against it, yet if you just take a glance at a few feminist books you’ll quickly realize this too is a sham. Nudity and sex run the show for feminism. Maybe you don’t believe me. It’s the heavyweight champ of marital destruction.

Perhaps one should ask why birth control and abortion are such critical issues if sexual promiscuity isn’t the key issue for “women’s healthcare”. Meera Shah, head of Planned Genocide- whoops, I meant to say Planned Parenthood, recently said regarding rumors of a possible COVID-19 shutdown, “Pregnancy-related care, especially abortion care, is essential and life-affirming.” I’m still a little confused as to what is life-affirming (she’s confusing life with lifestyle) when we’re talking about murdering babies, but that’s beside the point. They were willing to continue to provide abortions (Planned Parenthood primarily conducts abortions, don’t let the narrative fool you) during a pandemic. That should tell you two things, promiscuous premarital sex is on the menu even when social distancing and a pandemic are afoot, and, eliminating undesirable or unwanted babies is an essential part of a woman’s life. That quote was from March 20th of this year, in peak COVID panic. Women must be free to be promiscuous and so must men according to the feminist dogma. Free of consequence, and by consequence they mean the blessing of children. Remember, the nice feminist at Planned Parenthood will hiss, “you will surely not give birth.” Cutting off inheritance one lie at a time.

Feminism is intersectional and devoted entirely to the deconstruction of everything the patriarchy has built. Their goal is to make a man into an adulterer, a homosexual, a deadbeat, or an accomplice to a baby’s murder. For the price of promiscuity and consent. Don’t get me wrong, consent is a good thing, but only in the confines of creation-ordained marriage. Anything else is merely consenting to defy God- and look how that worked out. But there’s also another way to corrode marriage.

Make no mistake, pornography is one of the key sleeper strategies here. Not necessarily of feminism, but of a culture obsessed with sex. If you are a man struggling with pornography, you need to seek help and accountability. You also need to know a couple things even on the pragmatic level that pornography does to those who are sucked in by it. Just pragmatically speaking:

It rewires your brains addictive dopamine pathways

It robs you of contentment, desire, testosterone, and confidence

It destroys what is meant by God to be a fulfilling and pleasing endeavor with your wife

Get help now if you are struggling in this area. Reach out to us (via email) and we can steer you anonymously in the right direction. It will destroy you if you allow it to continue. Many men have struggled greatly in this area and have been able to emerge better. Our society is geared toward using sexually suggestive material to promote far too many things, and you should be repulsed and enraged by it, not secretly pleased to skip averting your eyes.

Women and the Curse. A brief overview for married men of what you can do to help.

16 To the woman He said,

“I will greatly multiply

Your pain in childbirth,

In pain you will bring forth children;

Yet your desire will be for your husband,

And he will rule over you.”[2]

For women, discontent destroys, defers, or damages marriage. The assault on women is discontentment with estate, this is universal for men and women in our society. For women, often the lust comes from external sources pushing the discontent with authority and rule. The desire tends to be a more assertive man who’s more involved. This should be you. It’s not a bad goal.

But here’s where you can help as a man. Make decisions, get involved, and know what’s going on in your own house. The manager who doesn’t know how to do the inventories he demands is hated by everyone. Don’t be that guy. Be a sacrificial leader in your home and actively seek to participate- not to get in the way, but to render things easier for your wife as much as possible. This also means taking charge of the training, education, and discipline of your children whenever and wherever you can. Society is doing enough to rob them of their faith, morale, and morality. Don’t contribute to this. This doesn’t mean being a drill instructor, though that can be of some help on rare occasions. Your job as a father is to lead by example with nurture and admonition. What is the husband and father you want for your daughters, or that you want your sons to become? You’re creating that standard now. A pretentious gorilla or an effeminate yes man will not do. Sit down to dinner with your family and throw your phone somewhere far away. Don’t put a number on the amount per week, just do it as often and regularly as humanly possible. Work at making it home for dinner, or, being present and available at dinner.

What then must I do?

It’s important to remember that temptation didn’t just appear with craned necks, smartphones, and magazines. It’s the oldest tool in the book for Satan. It goes all the way back to the beginning. It’s ultimately harlotry of the heart, namely idolatry. It always goes back to who the Triune God is and who we are. Satan busts out the same tired old tools with fresh paint jobs and we like sheep run astray. Stupid and in love with the shiny thing that fills our heart with desire.

Satan always questions scripture. Jesus always answered with scripture, mercy, or hilarious rhetoric, so should we. Satan waged an atheistic assault on Jesus’ divinity, questioning the hypostatic union (the fact that He was truly God and truly man). Satan tempted Jesus by belittling the miracle of turning hearts of stone to hearts of flesh (Ezekiel 36:26) and focusing instead on making stones into bread to eat. Satan is saying the same thing every atheist does; “show me a miracle and then I’ll believe.” But the miracle is the restoration of the fallen estate, the redemption of Christ’s people from the estate of fallen man. The spiritual death being turned to spiritual life by the very breath of God. Like Adam in the garden, brought to life by the breath of God, so we are spiritually given new life by the breath of God. The Holy Spirit applies Christ’s work to us! This is the miracle that Satan is trying to undermine permanently via temptation. Satan isn’t looking to be converted or be given new birth, he’s looking to damn the spiritual offspring of Christ and destroy humanity. Jesus doesn’t buy it. Jesus turns right to God’s Word and opens fire, refuting Satan’s second attempt to twist God’s words and manipulate them. The point being: turn to Jesus Christ and know the Scriptures inside and out, in season and out of season.

What God has given you is enough. Remember we did earn something by our deeds, going to hell. In His mercy, Christ gave His people everything and then added more to it. Be grateful you can read, that you have life, and, if you’re a Christian; that you have new life abundant. The doctrine of Providence is a sweet reminder that Jesus cares for His sheep. The Triune God of Scripture planned out every single thing that has happened. He holds up the trillionth of a second wherein motes of light dance across surfaces at atomic levels. He also holds up the entire timespan of the cosmos, all by His sovereign word and rule. He also condescends kindly to communicate with His image bearers by his revealed Word. Even stooping to the baby image-bearer composed of atoms knit together in a mother’s womb reverberating with the frequencies from her father’s voice at family worship. We can truly say thanks be to God for His mercies are new every day. His grace is enough, and so we can experience the serpent-stomping pleasure of “The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment.”
